2017 Sign Off Post

2017 has been a great year and if anything it went way too fast. The one thing I will miss about room 10 is that everyone got along so well and we never had any big arguments. For next years class, I am hoping that I will have Evan again as e have been best friends since day one and we get along really well. For the summer holidays, I am going up to Mahia with some family friends up until Christmas and then we will spend time with all our family and friends at home after all that is the best part about Christmas. My big goal for next year would definitely be to get my sports gold and then getting my honours. So that's all for now and I'll see you in 2018!

Maths - Enlargement drawing

For 10 minutes in maths, we have been doing scale drawings. For the first week, we practised on some easy drawings and then for the last week we got to choose an image of the internet and then enlarge it. Here's mine.

Maths Dictionary

Ofer the last two weeks for maths we have been doing a google slid called maths dictionary. Every morning for 10 minutes we would complete a slide with a maths words like reflection or tessellation we had to find the definition for the word and put some other things to do with the word to make it look professional. Here is my completed slide.

Jibjab - Christmas Ecard

For reading, we have been making these Christmas cards on a site called Jib Jab. Some of the templates were hilarious whilst the rest had more of a Christmas feel to them. The template I chose was Sled race and here it is.

Writing - Pobble 365

Over the past week for writing, we have been doing this slide called pobble 365 each day we were given a photo and lots of activities to do. For most of the days I chose question time but I also did a drawing and sentence challenge. Read the slide above for more!

All About Me

Over the last 3 days, we have been doing a google drawing for our next years' teacher called all about me. We had to put in things about us like Our interests, Learning areas we enjoy, a photo of yourself and lot of other things we would like our new teacher to know. Here is my completed drawing.

Mandarin

This week for mandarin we painted pandas using traditional Chinese ink. To start off we used a scrap piece of paper for a practice and then for our good copy we used rice paper that was very thin.  It was challenging to pain because the ink was very runny and it would smudge all over the page. Overall it was fun and I think my good copy was better than my first one

Short Stories - Explaining The Unexplained

This term for writing for writing we had to write a short story to do with our inquiry explaining the unexplained these would then be published and sent to other classes in Sheppard who would then decide which story was the best. For my topic I chose a murder mystery and published it using google slides. Read the slide above for my story.

Passion Project - MH370 Disaster

Over the last four weeks, we have been doing passion projects to do with our inquiry topic explaining the unexplained. Evan and I decided to do the MH370 disaster and make a video about it.
Reflection:
To start off with we knew we had to gather as much information as possible so we visited new and old sites until we had the information we needed to create ou video. once we had all of the information written down we to work on a plan for the video, Here it is.
Video Planning

  1. Title
  2. A few Things About Mh370
  3. Searched areas
  4. Conspiracy theories
  5. Our thoughts on what happened to the plane
  6.  Latest reports
  7. conclusion
After that was finished we set out to find a video maker after website after website we couldn't find one that fitted our work so we fixed the problem by using powtoon and that worked perfectly.

Duane Kale - New Zealand Paralympian

Last assembly NZ paralympian duane kale came into to talk to us about his life and how he went to the paralympics. Duane was wheelchair bound after having a chuma on his spinal cord but having no feeling in his legs from the waist down didn't stop him from swimming and winning four gold a silver and bronze medals in the 1996 paralympics. Kale is know the vise president of the international paralympic committee.

Duane Kale left with and inspiring message, It doesn't matter about the amount of money in your bank account or the the house you owned all that matters is that you made an impact on yours and other people's lives.

Science Badge - Marine Biology

This term some students from room 10 including myself have chosen to do a science badge. I have chosen to do marine biology because marine life is something that interests me and I have thought about it being my job in the future. Here is one of my tasks to explain the difference between the currents and tides.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Difference Between Currents and Tides

Tides

There are two major positions for a tide these are high and low tide. This changes when water rises up up the beach and then is pulled back out slowly over a twelve hour period. This is cased gravitational force from the moon

Currents

Current describes the motion of moving water. Currents in close to shore are created by the tides but the currents way out at sea are mainly caused by wind. Currents can often be dangerous because of the water being pulled out to sea or across the beach.

Here is a diagram to show the tides and currents

Athletics Learning - Long Jump Techniques

This Term we are doing athletics for PE for writing last week we had a task of choosing an athletic event and then writing a description. I chose long jump and here is my description.

Long jump is an athletic field event in which the athlete is to have a run up of 12- 20 steps and jump as far as they can into a pit of sand. Today I am going to describe different techniques of long jump and how to improve your technique.

If you are a beginner you need to know the 4 components  these are the run up, the take off, the flight and the landing. There are also three main techniques that you also need to know the hitch kick, the hang and the sail but I will talk about all of this seperately.

The run up is one of the most critical parts to long jump alongside the take off because speed, plus height equals distance. so you need to make you are going full speed before the board but first you need to make sure your run up is not too long or too short. so most people have a run up of 12-19 strides depending on your skill level.

The take off is also important to get right because this determines how far you will go. So  you need to get you angles spot on, as you definitely don't want to jump straight up do you?, this isn't high jump after all.

Now onto the flight and there are 3 different techniques during the flight. these are the Hitch kick where are in a running motion through the air, the Hang when you are in a hang motion through the air and the sail where you literally sail through the air with your hips out in front of you.

And Finally the landing, this is where you need to transfer your flight technique into the landing to do this you need to bring your hips around to a point where they are directly in front of you and when you hit the sand make sure you have your toes up, heels as far away from you center of mass as possible and bring your arms down by your side but make sure you don't put them behind you because that is where you will be marked from.

Now when your school athletics day comes around I hope these skills and techniques will help improve you long jumping and maybe, just maybe you may even get in the top three.

Term 3 Highlights/Reflection

We have been doing a lot of things over the term like X - Country, Timbernook, Electives and still to come is the social out of all these activities my highlight was going to flax rock for electives we did a whol lot of climbs from really easy one to having to climp with over hangs and especially the chimney but my favourite climb would have to be the chimney even though it was very hard as there were limited holds to crab onto and literally none at the to so you had to put your feet one side of the wall an you back on the other and slide yourself up. the other cool part of the climb was there wer ledges that you could sit on and  and then look out the gaps in the wall down below while being 13 metres up!.

Position an Orientation Learning

Over the last 2 weeks for maths learning, we have been doing position and orientation. We have been doing a lot of activities on the workspace and with our maths group, some of these are Tetris, Co-spaces and a treasure map using coordinates and a scale to find the treasure here is a photo of my map so far.

Values Posters

For the last 2-3 weeks, we have been making posters for our new values that have just been launched earlier this term I have made two posters using a site called canva, here they are

Mandarin - Role Play Menu

For our latest Mandarin session, we had to create a menu and then make a role play speaking Chinese Evan, Shamus and I were in a group together we found it quite challenging because we hadn't  practiced the script that much as we never got time to write it down here's
 our menu.

Class Speech 2017

On Monday we presented our speech that we had been working on for nearly 3 weeks here is my speech and speech reflection.

Tena koutou ka toa
Ko Luca toku ingoa
I am going to talk about how surfing is good for the mind and soul and why you should try it.

Sometimes life’s loads can dump on you like the crashing waves on a sandy beach. Well, surfing can help you improve your mental health and give you a great outlet to relieve stress and tension, Plus you will feel happier, more energetic, and more refreshed. Why? Surfing brings you closer to nature…well right in it to be exact. There is nothing like floating in the ocean, feeling free and at one with nature.

Learn patience and perseverance.

Like any new skill or activity, you need to dedicate time to learn it. For most that aren’t born to surf, it does take that little bit longer. But the key is patience and practise. Not only to learn how to surf a wave, but the patience to wait for that perfect wave to surf. Through surfing you will quickly learn the lesson of perseverance and the reward it can give.

Get fit. Get strong. Get active.

To put it simply, surfing is a full body workout. Now it’s not your everyday full body workout you get at the local gym. This is a unique workout using muscles you never knew existed. From paddling out past the wave break to the quick snap onto the board and balance, surfing is an all-round perfect blend of strength and cardio training.
Experience the best in the world
If you think about it…surfing is a great way to get traveling and visit some of the best places in the world. In NZ we have many surf breaks on some of the most amazing surf – Raglan, Wainui, Piha, Shipwreck Bay, Coromandel and Castle point ….just to name a few Plus many others around the world.  Surfing gets you exploring new surroundings, meeting fellow surfers and making more holiday moments you will remember for years to come.

In conclusion, I think that you should all give surfing a go this summer and plus us being in Hawkes Bay we are surrounded by beaches and surfing may even just become a new hobby of yours that will improve your health and mind.
Speech Reflection
Self Reflection!

WALT: Plan, prepare and deliver a persuasive speech related to our T3 inquiry topic - Healthy Bodies, Strong Minds
Topic:Why Surfing is good for the mind soul and body
Persuasive component: WHy you should try surfing
Time: 2 minutes 11 seconds

Keep
(What would you keep in your speech if you did it again?)
Change

(What would you change in your speech for next time, how could you make it even better? and why?)
Match
(Pick a partner from our class and ask what they would keep, change, add and chuck. What is similar your’re thinking?)
I would keep my Introduction because I think that has the most detail of all the paragraphs

I would probably change my conclusion because I think it needs a bit more detail to completely finish it off
I matched with Evan
Keep: Evan would keep his intro and conclusion because they are the paragraphs that he spent the most time on.
Change: He would not be changing anything
Add: He would not add anything just change some words like reflect and define.
Chuck: He wouldn’t want to scrap any of his speech because the feedback said that most of his points came from his expressive writing.

Our most similar thinking would be our keep because we would both keep our intro because that is where we spent most of our time working on.
Add
(What further ideas and/or detail would you add to your speech? Were you persuasive enough - what do you peers think?)
Chuck
(What are some of the parts of your speech you would scrap?)
I wouldn’t add anything because I feel that I have covered everything that I need to for my speech topic
I don’t think I would scrap anything otherwise my speech would be to short and there wouldn’t be enough information

Reflective thoughts above + feedback from your learning buddy/peers/teacher
= your next LEARNING step...

My next learning step for my next speech in the future is ……. To practice my speech more so I don’t stay looking at my cue cards and not make any eye contact with the audience

Because… I started my speech straight away by looking at my cue cards
